Myalgic Encephalomyelitis

ME [CFS] is a prolonged debilatating disease, the most notable symptoms being: profound fatigue; constant and severe muscle and joint pains; compromised mental ability; insomnia; weakened immune system. There are also dozens of recognised secondary symptoms that stem from these main problems.

There is no known cure and very few effective treatments. Most people use their own combinations of homeopathic and prescription remedies in an attempt to alleviate the symptoms. Approxiamately twenty percent of suffers recover completely within two years, those that do not can expect to suffer some degree of illness indefinitely. Some sufferers remain seriously ill, often housebound, for many years.

Coeliac Disease

Coeliac Disease -- Celiac Disease -- is an intolerance to gluten, a protein found in grains. It is incurable and potentially dangerous but easily controlled with a gluten-free diet. It is genetic but doesn't necessarily develop from birth; it can be triggered later in life by another condition or disorder.

When a Coeliac eats or drinks anything containing gluten, the body can't digest it and the immune system kicks in. This damages the villi in the small intestine, which affects the absorption of nutrients. Once you've been diagnosed, the only answer is to cut out all gluten.
